Biography

Koichi Wakamiya was a Nikon optical designer who moved from custom instruments and equipment into camera-lens development. He designed the 35 mm f/2.8 optical system for Nikon’s first autofocus compact camera, the L35AF “Pikaichi,” then continued with later Pikaichi models. Nikon also identifies the Series E 100 mm f/2.8 and the UV-Nikkor 105 mm f/4.5S among his signature designs, and credits him with training Kouichi Ohshita.
