P. Angénieux Lenses

Est. 1935 · Saint-Héand, Loire, France · 3 lenses

Pierre Angénieux founded Établissements Pierre Angénieux in Paris in 1935 after studying at the École Supérieure d'Optique and working in cinema. The company moved its headquarters to Saint-Héand in 1940 and built a new factory there in 1946, establishing the Loire site that remains the center of Angénieux design and production.

The company's defining still-photography breakthrough was the 1950 Retrofocus, whose strong negative front section created the long rear clearance required by single-lens-reflex mirrors. The first production example was the Type R1 35 mm f/2.5, followed by wider and faster designs including the 28 mm f/3.5 Type R11. Angénieux also produced fast primes, telephotos, and early zooms for still cameras, while its cinema work grew into the company's enduring specialty.

Angénieux introduced a 4× 17–68 mm cinema zoom in 1957 and a 10× 12–120 mm zoom in 1961, followed by the 25–250 mm 10× zoom for 35 mm cinema in 1962. Its space-program optics included the 25 mm f/0.95 lens used by Ranger 7 and 6×25 zooms carried on Apollo 11 and Apollo-Soyuz. The company received multiple Academy scientific and technical awards for zoom-lens engineering.

Thomson-CSF acquired Établissements Angénieux in 1993; Thomson-CSF became Thales in 2000. Photography-lens production ended in 1994 as the Saint-Héand operation concentrated on professional cinema, broadcast, and specialized optics. Modern Angénieux cinema lines—including Optimo, Optimo Ultra, EZ, and Optimo Prime—continue the company's emphasis on high-ratio zooms, mechanical precision, and consistent color and rendering across lens families.
