Large-format Lens Board Lenses

View-camera lens-board and shutter-mounted optics | Mostly 4x5, 5x7, and larger sheet-film or technical-camera coverage

Large-format lenses usually do not belong to a single proprietary camera mount. A lens cell or shutter assembly is fitted to a removable lens board, and the camera supplies the bellows draw, front-standard movements, ground-glass focusing, and film holder or digital back. The practical interface is therefore a board and shutter opening rather than a bayonet with a fixed flange distance.

That changes the optical problem. Designers can assume unit focusing by moving the whole lens, generous back-focus variation from bellows extension, and image circles larger than the nominal film gate so rise, fall, shift, tilt, and swing can be used without immediately clipping the field. Coverage, usable image circle, and behavior at stopped-down working apertures often matter as much as full-aperture speed.

In this catalog, the large-format lens-board category groups view-camera and technical-camera taking lenses from makers such as Rodenstock, Schneider-Kreuznach, and Carl Zeiss Jena. Enlarging lenses and fixed-camera lenses remain in their own metadata categories unless the data file represents a view-camera taking lens.
